Q:What is Rent Relay?
Rent Relay is an electronic rent payment service. We help landlords, property managers, mortgagees, private lenders and tenants process their payments quickly and securely using Pre-authorised Debit or Online Bill Payment. Our company was founded by investment property owners to serve the real estate vertical and related income streams.
Q:Where can I use Rent Relay?
The Rent Relay service can be used in every province except for Quebec at this time. We service Canadian properties exclusively.
Q:How much does Rent Relay cost?

Rent Relay has its headquarters in Toronto, ON. We also have a service centre in Edmonton, AB. We are proudly Canadian owned and operated.

Q:Who can use Rent Relay?
Rent Relay can be used by anyone who would like to stop using cheques or cash. Examples include: rent, private loan payments, parking or storage fees. You can also use our service for one-time payments such as rent top-ups or administration fees.
Q:Which payments can I accept with Rent Relay?
We offer two payment methods: Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) or Online Bill Payment (OBP). PADs work the same way as post-dated cheques, except that there are no paper payments to collect or deposit. OBP payments are made through online banking at the discretion of the tenant.
Q:What happens if a PAD payment bounces or an OBP payment is missing?
If a PAD payment is returned, both the tenant and the landlord are immediately alerted so that payment arrangements can be made. Typically this is done using OBP.

If an expected OBP payment is missing, a Rent Relay client representative will alert the landlord and the tenant right away.

Q:How long does it take OBP or PAD payments to settle?
Electronic payments settle significantly faster than cheques and do not require any trips to the bank for deposit.

PAD payments settle in 5 business days and OBP payments settle in 2 business days. All payments are transferred directly to the payee’s account.

Q:Is there a limit to how many properties or renters I can add to my account?
Rent Relay is a payment solution that scales to your needs. There are no limits on numbers of tenants or properties that can be registered on your account. You can only pay for the transactions that occur – no more, no less.
Q:Can renters be assigned to more than one property or payment agreement?
Yes, renters can be associated to multiple payment agreements. For example Joe Tenant can pay his rent, parking and storage payments to three different Rent Relay payees if required. Payments can also be made on behalf of others using Online Bill Payment.

Our IT team members have honed their skills working in large consulting firms specializing in information security and privacy management. The Rent Relay system uses sophisticated and reliable payment system technologies to keep your data safe and secure. This includes SSL, firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems, encryption, redundant servers and datacentres. Find our more at Security.

As a payment processor, we believe in going the distance when it comes to verifying identities, bank accounts and property ownership in order to combat fraud. We perform this service as part of our standard operations and as per directives from our industry association, the Canadian Payments Association.

Q:What is your Privacy Policy?
We believe in protecting your personal information. All data collected will only be used as per our Privacy Policy. We will never sell your data to 3rd parties.
